For four years, organizations operating within and outside the European Union (EU) that process personal data of EU residents have been expected to comply with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The global data protection landscape has evolved significantly since the GDPR became applicable on May 25, 2018, and the GDPR has become a model for data protection laws in other countries. In the absence of a comprehensive U.S. federal privacy law, U.S. states have forged ahead with their own laws that have elements in common with the GDPR, but there are some key differences that can make global compliance a challenge.
