Peter Craddock Quoted in Politico Article on Europe’s Cookie Law

Keller and Heckman Partner Peter Craddock was quoted in the Politico article, “Europe’s cookie law messed up the internet. Brussels wants to fix it.” The article refers to the e-Privacy Directive, an EU law revised in 2009 requiring websites to get consent from users before loading non-necessary cookies onto their devices.

“Too much consent basically kills consent,” noted Peter. “People are used to giving consent for everything, so they might stop reading things in as much detail, and if consent is the default for everything, it’s no longer perceived in the same way by users.”

Now, the European Commission is considering how to tweak the handling of cookies and consent banners, which has already prompted debates between industry and the privacy community.
