Peter Craddock Quoted in Lexology PRO Article on European Commission’s Investigation Against Shein

Keller and Heckman Partner Peter Craddock was quoted in the Lexology PRO article, “Shein illegal products and addictive features investigation launched.” The article covers the recent investigation launched by the European Commission under the Digital Services Act (DSA) against online retailer Shein, focusing on illegal product concerns, addictive features, and the transparency of its recommender systems.

Peter told Lexology PRO that while the DSA intends to prevent online deception and manipulation, this action extends that to addictive behavior. According to Peter, the commission’s investigation appears heavy-handed because gamification – enticing users to spend more time or money on platforms – does not constitute manipulation, as customers maintain their free will. 

This will be a key discussion as the commission investigates Shein, he added.
