Peter Craddock Quoted in Lexology PRO Article on Age Self-Verification

Keller and Heckman Partner Peter Craddock was quoted in the Lexology PRO article, “EU targets Snap and adult platforms, hardening stance against age self-verification.” The article reports that the European Commission has launched enforcement actions against Snapchat and several major adult platforms, signaling a tougher stance under the Digital Services Act (DSA) against relying on simple age self-verification to protect minors.

Peter claimed that the Commission’s approach is “problematic,” as it has not yet fully developed its approach to children’s online safety and age assurance, meaning it is enforcing against companies without a clear technical solution. He said it is “intellectually dishonest” to launch an investigation into Snapchat without first deciding its final approach to age assurance.

According to Peter, the DSA is “too full of vague notions and broad ideas,” and the Commission has taken a “paternalistic” approach to enforcement by dismissing platforms.
