Peter Craddock Quoted in Global Data Review Article on a Meta Targeted Ad Order

Keller and Heckman Partner Peter Craddock was quoted in the Global Data Review article, “Meta targeted ad order extended across the EU.” The article discusses the European Data Protection Board’s recent permanent ban against Meta’s use of two legal bases to process data for behavioral advertising. Peter weighed in on the recent order, saying, “It’s really important to be clear about the scope of this decision. This is only about reliance on contract and legitimate interest as legal grounds for processing of personal data.” He goes on to explain, “We’re going towards a general message that profile-based advertising is consent-only. At some point authorities will need to ask themselves if they’re creating a dead end for advertising-based business models and whether that’s intentional. This interpretation of the law has far-reaching implications and it is so important not to have a dogmatic approach.”
