Lithium batteries ranging in size from small button cells present in consumer products to large batteries used in electric vehicles and energy storage applications have become ubiquitous. The transportation of cells, batteries, and products containing these implicate certain regulatory compliance obligations and legal liability considerations which vary by size, type, and mode of transport.

This webinar will provide an overview of transportation regulatory obligations and legal liability considerations associated with the shipping of lithium batteries under the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) hazardous materials regulations (HMR) and international counterparts.

The webinar addresses the following questions:

  • When is a special permit or approval required to ship lithium batteries?
  • Does cell or battery size matter – what regulatory exceptions are available?
  • What testing is required for lithium cells and batteries?
  • What is a battery test summary, and who must provide it?
  • How do I ship cells or batteries that have not yet completed UN testing?
  • What marking, labeling, packaging, and documentation are necessary to ship lithium cells and batteries?
  • How do I ship damaged or defective cells or batteries?
  • Is a lithium cell or battery installed in a device subject to different shipping regulations?

This webinar is designed to provide in-house counsel, product stewardship managers, and other professionals with a fundamental understanding of key regulatory responsibilities, potential pitfalls, and options for minimizing legal risks in shipping lithium batteries and products containing such batteries.
