Adam Freeman, Ph.D., provides technical and scientific support to Keller and Heckman attorneys and their clients on regulatory compliance matters in the areas of food packaging and other food contact materials. He also assists in the development of testing protocols and risk assessment protocols.

Prior to joining Keller and Heckman, Adam was a Senior Materials Chemist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHUAPL). There he conducted pioneering research in the development of scalable gel polymer electrolyte technologies for the next generation, safe lithium-ion batteries, as well as the realization of specialty low friction coatings, anti-fouling coatings, and novel reversible adhesive systems. In addition, Adam successfully led the development of a revolutionary, on-skin curable polymer platform for enhanced dermal protection, in collaboration with researchers at the Johns Hopkins University Department of Dermatology.  

Prior to his time at JHUAPL, Adam spent sixteen years in the chemical industry, where he focused on acrylic and fluoropolymer-based materials as a senior researcher. During that time, he helped to develop and commercialize several products for the Building and Construction, Wire and Cable, and Specialty-industrial markets that are still commercially significant today. Over the course of his career, while working in the fields of polymer science and organic chemistry, Adam has amassed extensive experience and understanding of key structure-property relationships of various materials and coatings, and the molecular design and synthesis of numerous classes of monomers, polymers, and oligomers for ambient and photo-curable systems. This expertise allows him to assist our partners and clients in understanding the highly complex nature of the polymer systems and coatings that comprise modern food contact materials.

Over his career, Adam has received numerous awards including the Black Engineer of the Year - Outstanding Technical Contribution at a Non-Profit in 2021, and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory Office of Counsel Award for Leadership in 2019, amongst others. In addition, he holds several patents and has been published numerous times in leading scientific publications.
