Keller and Heckman Partner Sheila Millar was quoted in the Biometric Update article, “Kids online safety hits a legal and political breaking point in the US.” The article examines ongoing attempts to regulate children’s online safety and highlights a key disagreement among lawmakers: whether federal legislation should create a national baseline of protections or override the growing collection of state-level laws governing digital services.
Sheila predicts an “avalanche” of new state laws related to children’s online safety over the next one to two years. States, she said, continue to replicate provisions that have already been found unconstitutional, driven by bipartisan political pressure and a form of regulatory one-upmanship in which lawmakers seek to outdo neighboring states with tougher rules.
