Mark Thompson Quoted in Food Processing Article on Ultraprocessed Foods
Keller and Heckman Partner Mark Thompson was quoted in the Food Processing article, “Carving Out an Ultraprocessed Foods Definition.” The article reports that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to establish a definition for ultraprocessed foods, despite HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s statement that one would be in place by April.
“It was only a matter of time before they realized how hard it would be to establish a definition that was going to target the foods they didn’t like without lumping in items that they want to encourage,” said Mark.
“According to prior comments from RFK Jr., the end game was a labeling requirement that would seek to dissuade consumers from purchasing UPFs — but that has become an undesirable outcome,” he continued. “So, it sounds like they’re considering a downshift to more of a generalized guidance on UPFs in lieu of proposing a thorny definition."
