Evangelia Pelonis Authored an Article for Food Processing

Keller and Heckman Partner Evangelia Pelonis authored the Food Processing article “Are Regulators Ready For Cultured Meat?” The article discusses the need for U.S. regulators, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), to create a framework surrounding the newly popularized cultured proteins, or lab-grown proteins. The framework places the FDA as the primary authority for these products prior to the harvesting stage, with the USDA responsible for inspecting meat cells and finished products derived from livestock. However, as Evangelia explains, both agencies have yet to develop a comprehensive plan outlining the details, procedures, labeling requirements, and other issues, perhaps due to the newness of cell-cultured meat production.
