U.S. Wireless Market May Consolidate Further: AT&T Agrees to Purchase T-Mobile
The "Big Four" in wireless might soon become the "Big Three." On Sunday, AT&T announced its agreement to acquire T-Mobile. In terms of subscribers, the acquisition would make AT&T the largest mobile carrier in the United States. Though the press release from AT&T asserts that the deal will close in the next 12 months, in light of the size of the transaction and concerns over a virtual AT&T/Verizon Wireless duopoly, the deal likely will face intense scrutiny from Congress, the FCC and the Department of Justice. Much of the media attention following announcement of the deal focused on the ability of T-Mobile customers to secure access to the iPhone.
