Keller and Heckman LLP was mentioned in an article on the FoodNavigator-USA.com web site on the push for gum acacia to be designated a dietary fiber by FDA.
Gum acacia was not on the FDA’s list of ingredients classified as dietary fibers released last summer. However, key suppliers are preparing to submit a citizen petition to support its dietary fiber status based on new data they claim proves the ingredient has physiological benefits. Should suppliers convince the FDA that gum acacia delivers beneficial physiological effects, manufacturers will be able to count it as dietary fiber on the new Nutrition Facts labels.
In an August 8, 2018 meeting, manufacturers sought feedback from the FDA about what evidence it was looking for, according to gum acacia manufacturer Nexira, which said Keller and Heckman LLP is now preparing a Citizen Petition to be submitted to the agency later this month, requesting that gum acacia be recognized as a dietary fiber.
