Robert Scheuplein, Ph.D. joined Keller and Heckman as a scientific consultant.
Dr. Scheuplein began his scientific career at Harvard Medical School in 1962 as a Ph.D. physical chemist at the Massachusetts General Hospital specializing in skin physiology. He moved to FDA in 1977, where he worked in various senior scientific positions in the areas of toxicology, risk assessment, and food safety. From 1990 -1994 he was director of the Office of Toxicology Sciences at FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and was responsible for the management of both regulatory and research toxicology. In this position, he was the chief scientist responsible for advising the Director on the safety of food additives, color additives, contaminants, and other constituents in food. Dr. Scheuplein served as chairman of the Center's Cancer Assessment Committee and as a member of the Quantitative Risk Assessment Committee. In 1992, he was appointed to the position of senior toxicologist for the Center. He received several Awards and Citations, including the FDA award of Merit and the Distinguished Career Award.
Dr. Scheuplein is well known nationally and internationally for his expertise in food safety and cancer risk assessment. He served as a consultant to the WHO/FAO on risk assessment and risk management in the area of food safety. He has prepared testimony for Congress and has testified before Congress on food safety, risk, dioxin, pesticides and lead. In his career at K&H, he has advised firms on FDA and EPA pre-clearance requirements, FDA GRAS Notifications, Food Additive Petitions, EU Novel Food Applications, the safety of cosmetics, environmental contaminants, and GRAS and Food Additive safety testing.
