In May 1961, President John F. Kennedy committed the United States to landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth by the end of the decade.  Before that goal was successfully accomplished in July 1969, the American space program turned out a steady stream of smaller, yet necessary, successes.  A product of the Cold War, the space program was intended to protect the security of the nation.  Every space launch along the way to the historic mission of Apollo 11 was a building block with clearly defined learning objectives and a sense of urgency.
