JEROME H. HECKMAN SELECTED TO RECEIVE
CENTER FOR FOOD SAFETY AND
APPLIED NUTRITION DIRECTOR'S SPECIAL CITATION AWARD

WASHINGTON, DC — Jerome H. Heckman, founding partner of Keller and Heckman LLP, has been selected to receive the Department of Health and Human Services, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Director's Special Citation Award. Mr. Heckman has been chosen for this award, to be presented by CFSAN Director Joseph A. Levitt, because he has provided "invaluable assistance" to FDA. The award is being presented "for sustained and successful participation in the establishment of a new, fully funded system for FDA's approval of food contact substances." The award reflects Mr. Heckman's role in representing The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) in work with FDA to achieve an innovative and streamlined regulation of packaging materials.

Mr. Heckman is a well-recognized expert in food and drug law. He represents domestic and foreign corporations, and trade associations before the Food and Drug Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Agriculture, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Mr. Heckman's expertise extends to all aspects of FDA law, and his client base includes the full spectrum of FDA-regulated industries, among them, chemical, food, and other manufacturing firms.

Since 1954, Mr. Heckman has served as General Counsel to The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. Mr. Heckman was inducted into the Plastics Hall of Fame in 1986 and was awarded the Spes Hominum medal by the National Sanitation Foundation in 1987. Mr. Heckman has been a member of the Board of Editors of the Food Drug Cosmetic Law Journal and has authored more than 125 papers on issues involving food and drug packaging, product liability, and trade associations. He received The Society of the Plastics Industry, Color and Additive Compounders Division's (CACD) William Bradbury Award. The award recognized and honored his contributions to the success of the color and additives compounding industry. He is a frequent speaker on food and drug matters. He is listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Law. He received his undergraduate degree and Juris Doctor from Georgetown University. While attending Georgetown Law School, Mr. Heckman served as Federal Legislation Editor of the Georgetown University Law Journal

Mr. Heckman will receive his award at the upcoming Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition's Honor Award Ceremony on June 23, 2000.
