Hundreds of Food Additives Will be Revised in Korea

Korea Food and Drug Administration recently proposed revisions to the Standards and Specifications for Food Additives. The broad revisions cover the sections of "General Provisions", "Standards for Manufacturing and Preparation" and "Standards and Specifications" which bring significant changes to the current use of hundreds of food additives in Korea. A summary of the revisions has been provided below.

(1) General principles for the quality of food additives are newly established.

(2) Definitions of the following 26 food additives are revised:

Calcium 5-Ribonucleotide, Sorbitan Esters of Fatty Acids, Ester Gum, Lactic Acid, Magnesium Sulfate, Magnesium Phosphate, Tribasic, Licorice Extract, Cellulose, Microcrystalline, Kaoliang Color, Diatomaceous Earth, Lactoferrin Concentrates, Cellulose, Powdered, Acid Clay, Tara Gum, Monascus Color, Monascus Yellow, Carthamus Red, Carthamus Yellow, Active Carbon, Gallic Acid, Rice Bran Wax, Chitin, Pullulan, Hesperidin, Dammar Gum, Grape Seed Extract.

(3) Compositional specifications of the following 168 food additives are revised:

(4) Standards for the use of the following 39 food additives are revised:

Calcium gluconate, Butylated Hydroxy Toluene, Methyl Cellulose, Propyl Gallate, Butylated Hydroxy Anisole, Sorbic Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Benzoic Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Silicon Dioxide, Titanium Dioxide, Calcium Phosphate, Tribasic, Calcium Phosphate, Dibasic, Calcium Phosphate, Monobasic, Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose, Calcium Carboxymethylcellulose, Sodium Carboxymethyl Starch, tert-Butylhydroquinone, Polyvinyl Polypyrrolidone, Calcium Glycerophosphate, Oxystearin, Sodium Diacetate, Magnesium Silicate, Potassium Benzoate, Calcium Benzoate, Calcium silicate, Calcium sorbate, Potassium Ferrocyanide, Sodium Ferrocyanide, Calcium Ferrocyanide, Sodium Metasilicate, Acetone, Diatomaceous Earth, Kaolin, Bentonite, Acid Clay, Perlite, Active Carbon.

KFDA notified the proposal to the WTO on September 24, 2010 (G/SPS/N/KOR/377) for comments which will be due on November 23, 2010.
